Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car

Those who know me are probably groaning right now  "Oh God, it's all about car magazines!" But it's not. Not all, anyway; but I figured I'd start with this one because the February 2014 issue (#102 if you're keeping track) is right here on my desk.

I've been a charter subscriber to S&EC since it came out in 2005. The thing I like most about it is the variety of vehicles. Many import/sports car rags emphasize the Ferrari/Corvette/Porsche genre, but in S&EC it's not unusual to find an article on a 1975 Austin Marina GT (in this month's issue) which has been in the same family since it was new. Also this month is an annual feature called Gray Matters, which is about cars 25-years-old which were never imported to the U.S. for one reason or another, but because of their age now may be legally brought in without worrying about safety and emissions standards (for all of you who've been just dying to drive a 1989 Peugeot 405 GLX4 — and you know who you are).

Regular features of S&EC include: In Our Garage, a look at the staff's vehicles; Fix It Again, Tony, a write-in question-and-answer forum where readers try and get their mechanical problems sorted; and Marketplace Buyer's Guide, with clues as to what to look for when buying your dream car (this month's car is the 1980-87 Lotus Esprit).

The magazine is well laid-out and very readable. Not a ton of jumps or myriad of unreadable fonts. Ads are there but unobtrusive. And the table of contents is just a couple of pages in for quick and easy browsing. — jc
